Mohammed Shami, an Indian fast bowler, was presented with the esteemed Arjuna award in New Delhi today. President Droupadi Murmu presented the national sports awards to India’s top-performing athletes on Tuesday at the Rashtrapati Bhawan, where cricketer Mohammed Shami was greeted with loud standing ovation.
Shami was the standout player for India with the ball in the ODI World Cup the previous year. When Shami got the award, he looked cheerful and positive in his maroon blazer. With the best statistics of 7/57, Shami claimed 24 wickets at an average of 10.70 and a strike rate of 12.20 in seven matches. Watch the video as Shami approaches the President to accept the honor.
Shami took three five-wicket hauls and a four-wicket haul at the ODI World Cup, despite missing the first four matches. He also achieved the greatest bowling stats by an Indian in WC history.
After suffering an ankle injury during the ODI World Cup, Shami was forced to miss the five-match Test series against England. However, he stated that he was eager to return to the team. Shami will likely be eligible for the third Test against England, despite missing the first two against them, according to sources.
